Fun Fact: I went scuba diving at the Great Barrier Reef

My name is Ryan, I’m the marketing intern this fall.  As my internship comes to a close, I know I made a great decision to intern here!  I’d like to share with you what I’ve learned, share my appreciation, and discuss my future plans.

From the time I interviewed, I knew that the culture at mAccounting was what I was searching for.  This has been reaffirmed again and again throughout my four months here.

How I Got Here

As a senior, graduation is fast approaching!  Going into last summer I was unclear about what direction I want with my career.  As a double major in finance and marketing, it was important for me to get experience in both fields.  Over the summer I worked with a mechanical engineering company within their service department.  The majority of my work was A/P invoicing and database auditing.  I was determined to find a marketing internship that would offer me the total package (both marketing and how to create a great client experience).

What I Have Done

Throughout the semester I have done a wide range of large to small projects, but it’s only right that I start off by talking about Asana (work tracking & project management software).  I have spent countless hours on it, and I was delegated a high level of responsibility with the project.  I hit the ground running, meeting with each member of the accounting team to identify and record every task that they do.  It took quite a bit of time, but looking back, it was a great way for me to meet everyone in the office.  From there we started the process of populating the fields with the information we gathered from meeting with the employees.  The process taught me a tremendous amount about how to build a database, project and team management.

Outside of Asana, day-to-day responsibilities were constantly changing.  I was often multi-tasking, working with a variety of people within the organization, and constantly being challenged with problems to solve.  Several projects I enjoyed the most included creating welcome packets, social media research/design and sales team support.  In such a fasted pace organization, I learned quickly that I had to approach my work with flexibility and curiosity, and greatly appreciated the autonomy with the understanding that guidance and advice was always available.

What are my Plans

While I have one semester left at Butler University, I am in the process of planning for post-graduation.  I would like to find a position within supply chain management—most likely within procurement or logistics.   My draw to this field is the ability to be involved with the whole process of delivering a product to a customer.  I am staying open to most locations, but I would like to move back to St. Louis, Missouri or another large city in the Midwest.  Down the road I hope to be able to move to Melbourne, Australia for a period of time and be in involved with bringing a Major League Soccer team to St. Louis.

I have genuinely enjoyed being the marketing intern at mAccounting.  I am proud to have been part of a company that is so forwarding thinking, entrepreneurial spirited and customer focused. I would like to give a special thank you to Beth for teaching me the importance of bringing positive energy to work every day, and for the great deal of knowledge that she has given me.  I would also like to thank the whole team for how welcoming and inclusive they have been.  As I move into my career, I will always appreciate my time with mAccounting, and will be sure to carry the many lessons with me.
